COVERAGE OVERVIEW

THE ASSOCIATION DOESN'T OWN A FLEET — BUT IT STILL HAS AUTO LIABILITY.

Every time a maintenance worker drives to the supply store, a treasurer deposits checks at the bank, or a board member drives to an inspection in their personal car, the association carries non-owned auto liability. If that driver causes an accident on association business, the injured party sues the association alongside the driver. The driver's personal auto policy does not cover the association.

SUPPLY RUNS

Maintenance staff driving personal vehicles to pick up parts, supplies, and materials for association repairs.

BANK & ADMIN

Treasurers and admin staff making deposits, mailing packages, and running office errands.

BOARD BUSINESS

Board members driving to meetings, inspections, vendor appointments, and attorney offices.

RENTAL VEHICLES

Trucks rented for community cleanup days, vans for board retreats, and temporary project vehicles.

WHY THE DRIVER'S PERSONAL POLICY ISN'T ENOUGH

THE EMPLOYEE'S POLICY COVERS THE EMPLOYEE — NOT THE ASSOCIATION.

When an employee or volunteer causes an accident while running an association errand, the injured party's attorney names every available defendant — the driver individually and the association as the entity that sent the driver on the trip. The driver's personal auto policy covers the driver. It does not cover the association as a named insured. Without HNOA, the association must defend and pay the claim from its own reserves or face a judgment with no insurance response. HNOA also serves as the underlying auto policy for the umbrella — without it, the umbrella may lack a valid auto policy to sit above.

COMMON QUESTIONS

HNOA AUTO — ANSWERED.

WHAT DOES HNOA COVER FOR AN ASSOCIATION?

The association's liability when employees or volunteers use personal or rented vehicles for association business. Covers defense costs and damages when the association is sued for an accident on an errand it directed.

DOES THE ASSOCIATION NEED HNOA WITHOUT A FLEET?

If anyone ever drives a personal car for association errands — bank deposits, supply runs, vendor meetings — the association carries non-owned auto exposure. HNOA is specifically for associations without owned vehicles.

DOESN'T THE EMPLOYEE'S PERSONAL POLICY COVER THE ACCIDENT?

The employee's policy covers the employee. The association is a separate entity and is not covered by the employee's personal auto. HNOA covers the association's separate liability.

WHAT ABOUT BOARD MEMBERS USING THEIR CARS?

Board members driving to meetings, inspections, or appointments create the same non-owned auto exposure as employees. HNOA covers the association regardless of whether the driver is an employee or volunteer.

DOES HNOA COVER RENTED VEHICLES?

The hired auto portion covers vehicles rented or leased by the association for short-term use — rental trucks for cleanups, vans for retreats, temporary project vehicles.

HOW DOES HNOA INTERACT WITH THE UMBRELLA?

HNOA serves as the underlying auto policy for the umbrella. Without HNOA, the umbrella may lack a valid auto policy to sit above, creating a gap in the excess structure for auto claims.
