THAT INCLUDES TOW TRUCKS, DUMP TRUCKS, BUCKET TRUCKS, VACUUM TRUCKS, CRANE AND BOOM TRUCKS, CONCRETE PUMP TRUCKS, TANKERS, TMA UNITS, STAGE TRUCKS, CAR HAULERS, STREET SWEEPERS, ROLL-OFF UNITS, AND DOZENS OF SIMILAR CLASSES. STANDARD PICKUPS, CARGO VANS, AND ORDINARY BOX TRUCKS ARE USUALLY WRITTEN UNDER COMMERCIAL AUTO INSTEAD.
ISN'T THIS JUST COMMERCIAL AUTO INSURANCE?
COMMERCIAL AUTO IS A PIECE OF THE PROGRAM, NOT THE WHOLE PROGRAM. A FULL SPECIALTY TRUCK PROGRAM USUALLY COMBINES COMMERCIAL AUTO WITH INLAND MARINE ON MOUNTED EQUIPMENT, CARE-CUSTODY-CONTROL COVERAGES LIKE ON-HOOK OR GARAGEKEEPERS, CONTRACTORS POLLUTION OR TRANSPORTATION POLLUTION WHERE APPLICABLE, RIGGERS LIABILITY FOR LIFTING OPERATIONS, A COMMERCIAL UMBRELLA, AND A GENERAL LIABILITY POLICY. HOW MUCH OF THAT YOU NEED DEPENDS ENTIRELY ON THE UNIT AND THE OPERATION.
WHY IS MOUNTED EQUIPMENT COVERAGE A SEPARATE CONVERSATION?
BECAUSE MOUNTED EQUIPMENT LIVES IN A COVERAGE GAP. IT IS PHYSICALLY ATTACHED TO THE TRUCK BUT OFTEN FALLS OUTSIDE WHAT A STANDARD AUTO PHYSICAL DAMAGE POLICY WAS DESIGNED TO COVER. INLAND MARINE OR CONTRACTORS EQUIPMENT COVERAGE IS USUALLY THE CORRECT PLACE TO INSURE THE CRANE, BOOM, TANK, VACUUM SYSTEM, OR SPECIALTY BODY — AND IT NEEDS TO BE WRITTEN WITH THE ACTUAL REPLACEMENT COST IN MIND, NOT A GUESS.
WHAT IS ON-HOOK COVERAGE AND WHY DO TOW OPERATORS NEED IT?
ON-HOOK COVERAGE RESPONDS WHEN A CUSTOMER VEHICLE IS DAMAGED WHILE IT IS BEING TOWED OR TRANSPORTED. GARAGEKEEPERS RESPONDS WHEN A CUSTOMER VEHICLE IS DAMAGED WHILE IT IS IN YOUR STORAGE LOT OR FACILITY. A STANDARD COMMERCIAL AUTO POLICY DOES NOT CONTAIN EITHER BY DEFAULT, WHICH MEANS A TOW OPERATOR WITHOUT BOTH IS CARRYING THE RISK PERSONALLY ON EVERY VEHICLE IN THEIR CARE.
DO I NEED POLLUTION COVERAGE ON A SPECIALTY TRUCK?
OFTEN YES. VACUUM TRUCKS, TANKERS, FUEL HAULERS, SEPTIC TRUCKS, HYDRO EXCAVATION UNITS, AND ANY TRUCK WITH A HYDRAULIC OR FUEL SYSTEM CARRY POLLUTION EXPOSURE. COMMERCIAL AUTO POLICIES TYPICALLY CONTAIN POLLUTION EXCLUSIONS THAT ARE WRITTEN EXACTLY FOR THESE EVENTS. TRANSPORTATION POLLUTION LIABILITY OR CONTRACTORS POLLUTION LIABILITY FILLS THE GAP, AND THE RIGHT ONE DEPENDS ON WHETHER THE EXPOSURE IS IN-TRANSIT, AT-JOB, OR BOTH.
HOW MUCH DOES SPECIALTY TRUCK INSURANCE COST?
THERE IS NO FLAT ANSWER BECAUSE THERE IS NO FLAT TRUCK. PREMIUM IS DRIVEN BY UNIT TYPE AND CLASS, MOUNTED EQUIPMENT VALUE, OPERATING RADIUS, DRIVER ROSTER, LOSS HISTORY, REQUIRED LIMITS, CONTRACT REQUIREMENTS, AND FLEET SIZE. A LIGHT-DUTY SERVICE TRUCK IN A SINGLE-UNIT OPERATION PRICES VERY DIFFERENTLY FROM A MULTI-UNIT ROTATOR OR HEAVY CRANE FLEET. A REAL QUOTE REQUIRES REAL NUMBERS.
